On the morning of June 12, 2016, as news of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy broke, I immediately began working on a visual symbol that could unite our city and show support for our community. Drawing from our not-yet ready city rebrand, I adapted our fountain icon—an emblem of Orlando—by integrating the Pride colors. Within the same day, I presented the concept to leadership, including my director, manager, and the Mayor’s Office. It was adopted the next day as the official mark of the OneOrlando Fund.
This icon became central to our outreach, appearing across social media, signage, video, digital communications, and print materials. We also created physical tokens of solidarity—stickers, lapel pins, and shirts—distributed to residents, staff, and dignitaries. To meet global demand, we released the artwork publicly, empowering others to use it in support of fundraising and awareness efforts.
Nearly a decade later, I remain deeply involved in shaping our ongoing Pulse remembrance efforts. I continue to lead creative direction for the annual CommUnity Rainbow Run 4.9K, our multilingual Remembrance Ceremony, and the Pulse memorial website—ensuring that our message of unity, love, and resilience continues to resonate.
